On October 18th, XXL, along with Cinematic Music Group and Ecko Unltd, presented “Remember When Rappers Could Rap?,” an evening entrenched with energetic performances from some of the game’s hottest young talents such as Big K.R.I.T., Smoke DZA, Joey Bada$$ and Fat Trel.
With newcomers Chance the Rapper and Cashius Green setting the energy of the stage to the right temperature, Brooklyn-bred rapper Joey Bada$$ along with his Pro Era posse performed songs off his critically acclaimed mixtape 1999. The young rapper’s yet-untitled new single is due out in early November through Green Label Sound. When asked about the new project, Joey claimed, “It’s going to be dope and I get to work with someone I consider an icon,” hinting an upcoming collaboration.
For the penultimate set, Smoke DZA—backed by his champagne-sipping entourage—bulldozed the stage. The Harlem native tore through his catalogue, earning a great crowd response, performing tracks off his recent release Rugby Thompson, entirely produced by Brooklyn’s Harry Fraud. DZA, with sweat dripping under his bucket hat, delivered a high-energy performance, keeping the lifted audience further elevated with lighters sparked throughout his set.
Finally, when Big K.R.I.T. took the stage mid-way through 10 p.m., he apologized in advance for cutting his set short, but proceeded to drop his country anthem “I Got This,” to an excited group of fans. With the stage all to himself, the Mississippi-born rapper blazed through his hyped-up, hook-driven bangers and proved to his New York constituency why he deserved to headline the event.

Three 6 Mafia To Be Inducted Into Memphis Hall of Fame

Three 6 Mafia will be among music legends B.B. King and Elvis Presley in the Memphis Hall of Fame.
The Memphis rap group, known for their hit "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp," will be among the first artists to be inducted into the Smithsonian's new Memphis Hall of Fame. A combination of authors, historians and music industry executives determined the list of honorees, the Memphis Daily News reports.
The 25 initial inductees include: Estelle Axton and Jim Stewart; Bobby “Blue” Bland; Booker T. and The MG’s; Lucie Campbell; George Coleman; Jim Dickinson; Al Green; W.C. Handy; Isaac Hayes; Howlin’ Wolf; B.B. King; Jerry Lee Lewis; Jimmie Lunceford; Professor W.T. McDaniel; Memphis Minnie; Willie Mitchell; Dewey Phillips; Sam Phillips; Elvis Presley; Otis Redding; The Staple Singers; Rufus Thomas; Three 6 Mafia; Nat D. Williams; and ZZ Top.
Three 6 Mafia will be honored in a special ceremony at the Cannon Center for Performing Arts in Memphis, on Nov. 29 at 7PM.

Is the Game's "Jesus Piece" Cover Art Too Offensive?

Game's fifth studio album, Jesus Piece, is one the most anticipated hip-hop albums of 2012 boasting features from Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown and more. And when it comes to the album's freshly revealed cover art, the Game ... well, let's just say he doesn't shy away from controversy.
The Compton-bred rapper unveiled his Jesus Piece artwork via Instagram today and some of his fans think he went too far. The stained glass-inspired image shows Jesus sitting on a throne adorned with gang-inspired symbols. Not only does His Holiness sport Game's signature Jesus Piece bling around his neck, but he also dons a teardrop tattoo under his right eye and a red bandana over his mouth, references to the Compton Blood gang.
One fan called it "blasphemous" and said they wouldn't "listen to this anti Semitic bull crap." Another called it "really disrespectful!" Some lauded the controversial cover saying that it's what they expected from the rapper known for pulling at one's strings, and that he was "giving Kanye West a run for his money with the creativity, one of a kind cover." (Similarly, Game's last album, The R.E.D. Album fell under gang-related scrutiny. BET and MTV infamously pulled his "Red Nation" video from the air for being too gang-affiliated.)
"Jesus Piece gives me an opportunity to speak about situations that people like me who love God but are still street and still wanna remain themselves without going the Pastor Mase route." Game told VIBE about the album's title. "It gives the opportunity to know that it's somebody out there that feels them."

Lamar, who lit up the underground rap scene with such noise-making mixtapes as Youngest Head Nigga in Charge (2003) and Overly Dedicated (2010) and his acclaimed indie release Section.80 (2011), is not at all running away from the buzz of him being the West Coast’s hip-hop savior.

In fact, Kendrick Lamar seems to be on everyone’s mind these days. Jay-Z lauds him. The aforementioned Nas has called him the future. Even Lady Gaga has sung the kid’s praises. “Everything he’s doing is done with integrity,” MTV personality and Sirius Satellite radio host Sway Calloway tells VIBE. The West Coast hip-hop authority believes Lamar has purity about him. “His music is done with passion and thought,” he adds. “Kendrick spent time and energy on these songs, man.”

Lil Wayne on His Comments About New York: "I Don’t Even Know the Reaction"

Lil Wayne may cause the hip-hop world to react off his in-the-moment comments, but it doesn't phase him. Really. In fact, Weezy isn't even aware of the commotion he caused by stating that "he hates New York." He hasn't heard Fabolous' "So NY" and could care less what anyone has to say about it. He recently told MTV News:
“I have to be honest with you, dog: All I do is work, and I swear to God, I don’t even know the reaction. If I knew the reaction I’d know how to be able to answer that question, but I don’t know the reaction. I just say what I want to say, do what I want to do and fuck who don’t like it.”

Faizon Love Says Katt Williams Pulled A Gun on Him

Things got heated between comics Faizon Love and Katt Williams out a Hollywood nightclub. What started as a friendly chat between "friends," turned ugly in the blink of an eye. Love tells TMZ that Katt flipped out on him after he brought up a $50,000 owed to him. Before he knew it, Williams had retrieved a gun from his car.
TMZ Reports:
Love says, "Once the argument escalated, Katt went to his car to go get his gun to pull it out on me.”
“Fortunately, one of my homeboys who was there took the gun out of Katt's hands."
Faizon continues, "Come to find out the gun he pulled out on me was not even loaded. My homeboy gave it back to him ... then we went in the club.”
Minutes later, Williams was arrested for a possible gun violation ... but Love insists he is NOT the person who called the cops.
“I am just extremely upset that his punk ass would pull a gun out on me and even play with me like that," Love says ... adding, "He better chill his ass out."
Williams was released the same night.

REPORT: Heroin Found On Nelly's Tour Bus . . . Was For 'PERSONAL USE'!!!

Rapper Nelly was detained last night in Texas while police officers searched his tour bus -- and found HEROIN in addition to a loaded gun ... and MASSIVE amounts of weed ... law enforcement sources tell TMZ.

According to law enforcement sources, Nelly's bus was stopped at a border patrol checkpoint in Sierra Blanca -- and a police canine detected the presence of drugs.

We're told cops pulled the bus over -- and after performing a search, they found 36 small baggies of heroin (totaling .64 ounces) and over TEN POUNDS of marijuana inside a large green duffel bag (an amount roughly the size of a large bed pillow).

Cops also say they found a loaded .45 caliber pistol.

Now police say that one of Nelly's FRIENDS ON THE BUS copped to the drugs and the gun. So Nelly is NOT being implicated in it.But here is the INTERESTING PART. Reports say that the man arrested claimed that the HEROIN . . . was for the PERSONAL USE of the people on the tour bus.
